Tenebrae
A concert of Passion music whose form and dramaturgy draw on the tradition of Tenebrae.
Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness" or "shadows") is the name of an increasingly rare Lenten service whose roots reach back to the eighth century.
The liturgy centres on fifteen candles, gradually extinguished as psalms are read and sung, leaving the congregation in ever-deepening darkness.
By the end of the concert, only one candle remains lit in the church, symbolising the Risen Christ.
